Title: How Important is a College Education
In general, it is possible to succeed without attending college. After all, not every employer requires a degree, and not every college graduate is employed. Many successful people never graduate from college. College is important for many reasons. For many students, college is their first "free" experience. "College is an investment in enriching lives." Part of the college experience is self-improvement and personal growth. College teaches responsibility and discipline in the context of students being on their own for the most part and learning how to be adults. Even at a young age, students have to make deadlines for homework assignments, teaching them responsibility and discipline. College also gives students better social skills and teaches them teamwork skills by having them work in groups. Self-improvement in a student’s life can not only help them when graduation comes around, but it may also help them achieve complete and happy lives. Although some people believe that college education should not be prioritized over teenagers. However, I believe that college education is important because college graduates have more and better job opportunities, they gain interpersonal skills, and they have lower poverty rates.
There are those who believe that many college graduates work in jobs that do not require a college diploma. This is because college graduates had a job that required only a high school diploma or less. Without a college degree, 34% of employed college graduates could have gotten their current jobs. For jobs in sales, administration, non-profit, software development, media, and many other fields, a college degree is not required. However, more and better job opportunities are available to college graduates. This is because college graduates went to college to get a better job. Workers with higher levels of education typically earn more and have lower unemployment rates than workers with lower levels of education. Underemployment among college graduates is 6.2%, compared to 12.9% and 18.7% for high school graduates and those with a high school diploma, respectively. Graduates reported being very happy with their jobs. Additionally, college graduates see more job opportunities than high school graduates. College graduates have 80% of all job openings, while high school graduates only have 50%. College graduates continue to enjoy more and better job opportunities and greater annual earnings than those with lesser levels of education. A university degree is required to become a doctor, a lawyer, or a biochemist. Therefore, although many people believe that many college graduates work in jobs that do not require a college diploma, you can see that college graduates have more and better job opportunities because they have lower rates of underemployment and see more job opportunities.
There are those who believe that many people achieve success without a college education. This is because successful people, such as Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, and Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, either never went to college or never finished their degrees. Without a college education, few college dropouts hold positions of power and achieve great success. They did not let their lack of education prevent them from achieving success. Nonetheless, college graduates develop important skills such as mature interpersonal relationships and social skills. College graduates develop mature interpersonal relationships by interacting with other students, joining student organizations and participating in discussions and debates. These skills enable college graduates to work well with others, succeed independently, and build confidence in their work. Mature relationships, according to Chickering and Reisser (1993), are distinguished by "tolerance and appreciation of differences, as well as capacity for intimacy." Furthermore, college graduates learn social skills and communication skills. Improving emotional intelligence and practicing effective communication skills can help you improve your social skills. Learning social skills can help you manage relationships and understand the feelings of others. Social skills enable you to communicate with, relate to, and connect with others. Therefore, although many people believe that many people achieve success without a college education, you can see that college graduates gain interpersonal skills because they develop mature interpersonal relationships and learn social skills.
Some people believe that college could cause a financial crisis. As of 2012, student loan debt exceeded $1 trillion, and more than 850,000 student loans had defaulted. According to the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, student loans are “beginning to have the same effect” on the economy. As of January 2013, the rate of default on student loans hit 15.1%– a nearly 22% increase since 2007. However, college graduates have lower poverty rates. Education also provides protection from poverty. Disaggregating the population by poverty illustrates a recurring pattern in the data. Adults with bachelor’s degrees or higher experience the lowest levels of poverty compared to other educational attainment levels. Of those adults who reported being at or below the poverty line in 2019, 26% have less than a high school diploma, 35% have a high school degree or equivalent, 26% have some college or an associate’s degree, and 14% have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Those with bachelor’s degrees or higher represent the smallest group of those living in poverty. Therefore, although many people think that college can cause financial crises, from the statement above, you can see that diploma or degree holders experience lower poverty.
In conclusion, although some might believe that a college education will be useless, I have proven that a college education could be beneficial to teenagers because it would help college graduates have more and better job opportunities and lower poverty rates. Most people are resistant to college education generally because they think college education is not important which they most likely learned through bad observation. College education has the potential to significantly reduce unemployment, increase job opportunities, and reduce poverty rates. I propose that we all recognize the value of a college education in order to significantly improve our next generation.

TITTLE:
How Important Is a College Education?
ISSUE:
Some people believe that college education should not predominate over teenagers, but you believe that college education is the starting point for the journey.
WHY COLLEGE EDUCATION IS NOT IMPORTANT
Many college graduates work in jobs that do not require a college diploma.
According to the Department of Labor, up to 17 million college graduates are employed in jobs that do not require a college diploma. In 2012, one in every three college graduates had a job that required only a high school diploma or less. Bachelor's degrees are held by more than 16,000 parking lot attendants, 83,000 bartenders, 115,000 janitors, and 15% of taxi drivers. College graduates who work in jobs that do not require a college degree earn 30-40% less per week than those who work in jobs that do.
Many people achieve success without a college education.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, five of the 30 fastest growing jobs between 2010 and 2020 do not require a high school diploma, nine do, four do require an associate's degree, six do require a bachelor's degree, and six do require graduate degrees. The following successful people either never went to college or never finished their degrees: Charles Culpepper, owner and CEO of Coca Cola; Ellen Degeneres, comedian and actress; Michael Dell, founder of Dell, Inc.; Walt Disney, Disney Corporation founder; Bill Gates, Microsoft founder; Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple; Wolfgang Puck, chef and restaurateur; Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple; Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook
Degrees do not guarantee learning or job readiness.
Many college graduates have little understanding of math, reading, civics, or economics. In 2011, college students reported studying 5 hours or less per week, and there was a 50% decrease in the number of hours a student studied and prepared for classes compared to a few decades ago. After four years of college, 36% of students showed no significant improvement on Collegiate Learning Assessments. In 2013, 56% of employers believed that half or fewer of college graduates possessed the skills and knowledge needed to advance within their organisations. 39% of college graduates believed that college did not adequately prepare them for employment, particularly in terms of technical and quantitative reasoning skills.
THESIS STATEMENT:
Although some people believe that college education should not be prioritized over teenagers, I believe that college education is important because college graduates have more and better job opportunities, they gain interpersonal skills and more productive as members of society
REASON
College graduates have more and better job opportunities.
85.2% of college freshmen said they went to school to "get a better job." In December 2019, the unemployment rate for people over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree was 1.9%, compared to 2.7% for those with some college or associate's degrees, 3.7% for high school graduates, and 5.2% for high school dropouts. College graduates have a lower rate of underemployment (6.2%) than high school graduates (12.9%) and people without a high school diploma (18.7%). Compared to 50% of high school graduates and 40% of people without a high school diploma, 58% of college graduates and people with some college or associate's degrees reported being "very satisfied" with their jobs.
College graduates gain interpersonal skills
Students can interact with other students and faculty, join student organizations and clubs, and participate in discussions and debates. "Developing mature interpersonal relationships" is one of the seven stages students progress through as they attend college, according to Arthur Chickering's "Seven Vectors" student development theory. In a 1994 survey of 11,000 college students, students ranked "interpersonal skills" as the most important skill used in their daily lives. According to Vivek Wadhwa, MBA, technology entrepreneur and scholar, "American children party [in college]." But you know what? They learn social skills by partying. They learn how to communicate with one another... They acquire skills that enable them to be innovative. Because of the educational system, Americans are the most innovative people in the world."
College graduates are more productive as members of society
Northwestern University President Emeritus Henry Bienan, PhD, contends that a college education leads to "greater productivity, lower crime, better health, [and] better citizenship for more educated people." According to a 2009 study, high school dropouts aged 16 to 24 are 63% more likely to be incarcerated than those with a bachelor's degree or higher. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 43% of college graduates did volunteer work from September 2008 to September 2009, compared to 19% of high school graduates and 27% of adults in general. College graduates (9%) were more likely to have donated blood in the previous year than people with some college (6%), high school graduates (4%), and people who did not finish high school (2%).
WEEK 3 ACTIVITY: PREDICTING OUTCOME (QUIZIZZ)
WEEK 5 ACTIVITY: ARGUMENTATIVE BODY PARAGRAPH
Students to form into groups of TWO or THREE and each group should work together to write a body
paragraph, and post their answers in the Week 5 Activity – Async section in the eLearning Portal.
Determine:
State the one of OPPONENT’S POINT made to support THEIR OPINION in your THESIS STATEMENT.
State the OPPONENT’S REASON they made for their point in this paragraph.
State YOUR REFUTATION (the counterpoint to your opponent’s point). This is your TOPIC SENTENCE for this body paragraph.
Give two SUPPORTING EVIDENCES to support your TOPIC SENTENCE.
Give a CONCLUDING SENTENCE for this body paragraph.
Please submit your BODY PARAGRAPH before Week 6.
Opponent point:
Some people think that running your own business might be isolating.
Opponent reason
As an entrepreneur, you will be in charge of all major choices and will be solely responsible for your actions.
Topic sentence
However, I think having your own business will provide you a lot of independence during the day.
Supporting evidence 1:
This is so that you can do anything you want, whenever you want, when you are the boss. You are in charge of choosing when to work and when to take a rest. Nobody will be able to direct your actions, and you are free to take whatever actions you deem appropriate for the business without having to take advice from anybody else.
Supporting evidence 2:
According to Pew Foundation research, 39% of business owners report having "full" job satisfaction, as opposed to 28% of employees. Because of the freedom that comes with working for oneself, entrepreneurs are happier.
Conclusion:
As a result, despite the fact that many people worry that being an entrepreneur can be isolating, it is evident that many entrepreneurs enjoy a great degree of freedom. Entrepreneurs also enjoy the freedom to decide what is important and whether to take a break or go to work.
WEEK 5 ACTIVITY: BROCHURE PRODUCT
Students to form into groups of FIVE or SIX. Each group should work together to create a brochure using JAMBOARD (Link will be given in class.)
Your brochure should have the following:
Name of your product/service (brand name/model/type where applicable)
Describe it in three words.
Short sentence to describe what your product/service is.
One reason why people should pay for your product/service. (i.e. what innovative features does it have as a product or service)
Use relevant images!
One group member to present (Someone other than last week’s presenter please!)
NOTES
READING-DISTINGUISH BETWEEN FACTS AND OPINIONS
Facts:
- Research/evidence confirms
- The place where you get your information/facts is a source
- The source is credible. It cannot be from your friends/family
- Opinions from experts can be factual
Opinions:
- Opinions may not have evidence to support
- Sometimes, language use can clue to an opinion
SIX PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES
- Know your audience
- Have a primary conclusion
- Develop your point as "good reasons"
- Define key terms
- Think about whether you want to mention the opposing side
- Practice!
FUTURE OF EDUCATION
The shape of education is changing with time and technology. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated its evolution even more. Today, the internet is allowing teachers and students to interact and for lessons to be delivered instantly across the planet. New online tools allow them to discuss their lessons synchronously and asynchronously.
Example:
- Homeschooling
- Personalized learning
- E-learning portals
- Physical campuses
- Gamification
SENTENCE CONNECTORS
- link ideas from one sentence to the next and to give paragraphs coherence.
- perform different functions and are placed at the beginning of a sentence.
- introduce, order, contrast, sequence ideas, theory, data etc.
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
- In PERSUASIVE ESSAYS you need to persuade the reader of your opinion.
- In ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS, you are “fighting” against an opposing idea that you do not agree with, or you want to correct people’s believe. You will also need to provide support and evidence for your own ideas and against the opposing idea. If you are standing on a stage, you are NOT trying to persuade the audience ALONE! You need to DEFINE YOUR OPPONENT in your introduction!
- To write an ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY, please CHOOSE AN ISSUE WITH TWO SIDES (E.g. Students should have free internet in classes/Students should not have free
- internet in classes).
- WRITER (You) CHOOSE ONE SIDE TO BE YOUR CLAIM – A CLEAR STAND (The other side becomes the OPPOSING SIDE).
- WRITER PRESENTS THE ISSUE (Writes an ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY THESIS STATEMENT). The THESIS STATEMENT should have your CLEAR STAND followed by THREE TOPIC SENTENCES
- WRITER DISCUSSES THE TOPIC SENTENCES ONE BY ONE by PRESENTING OPPOSING SIDES’ POINTS and REFUTING EACH SUBTOPIC LOGICALLY using the WRITER’S OWN POINT. (Writer’s side must show their topics are correct while the opposing side’s topics are inaccurate or wrong.)
- WRITER CONCLUDES BY RESTATING THESIS STATEMENT and SUMMARISING ALL POINTS ARGUED.
INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH
1. DESCRIPTION (OVERVIEW)
Description (Overview): General overview of the issue.
Minimum information so readers understand your arguments in the essay.
If your essay is about UniMAP life, you should at least state what UniMAP is,
where it is located and what is the issue being argued.
Ask these questions: Can the reader understand your opinion on the issue?
WHAT do they need to know about this issue? WHO are involved with this issue?
WHERE is this issue happening? WHY is this issue important? HOW did this issue
come to be?
DO NOT express opinions yet in the description section.
2. THESIS STATEMENT
Thesis statement states the purpose of and summarises the main points of
the essay. When reading a thesis statement, a reader should know your opinion on
the issue, what your intent for writing the essay and know what to expect from it.
Thesis statements should be:
Concise: Short and sweet—don’t use more words than necessary. State your
point clearly and directly in one sentence.
Combative: It expresses a personal opinion that requires further evidence to
back it up.
Coherent: Everything mentioned in your thesis statement must be supported and
explained throughout your essay.
3. THESIS STATEMENT STRUCTURE
Argumentative thesis statement: Present the opposing claim (of your
opponent), followed by your own opinion on the issue and the three topic
sentences to support your claim. (Topic sentences are the main points of your
body paragraph that supports your opinion – More about it next week.)
4. SENTENCE CONNECTORS IN THESIS STATEMENTS
Sentence connectors used in the thesis statement help readers understand the
flow of your argument.
HOW TO WRITE A STRONG BODY PARAGRAPH:
There should be three body paragraphs! Here are the parts of one body
paragraph:
- State the one of OPPONENT’S POINT made to support THEIR OPINION in your THESIS STATEMENT.
- State the OPPONENT’S REASON they made the point in this paragraph.
- State YOUR REFUTATION (the counterpoint to your opponent’s point). This is your TOPIC SENTENCE for this body paragraph.
- Give two SUPPORTING EVIDENCES to support your TOPIC SENTENCE.
- Give a CONCLUDING SENTENCE for this body paragraph.
